East Bay to SFO Car Service: How to Get to SFO From Hayward, Fremont, Pleasanton and Oakland

The short answer

From most of the East Bay, SFO is 30 to 60 minutes away by car, across the San Mateo Bridge, the Dumbarton Bridge or the Bay Bridge. For early flights, families with luggage and business travelers, a pre-booked car service is the easiest way to get there: door to door, no parking, no transfers, and available 24/7. American Limo & Sedans drives East Bay travelers to SFO every day.

How long does it take to get to SFO from the East Bay?

These are typical drive times outside of rush hour. Weekday mornings and Friday afternoons can add 15 to 30 minutes or more.

  • Hayward to SFO: about 30 to 40 minutes across the San Mateo Bridge.

  • Castro Valley and San Leandro to SFO: about 35 to 45 minutes, usually via the San Mateo Bridge.

  • Fremont, Newark and Union City to SFO: about 35 to 45 minutes across the Dumbarton Bridge.

  • Oakland to SFO: about 30 to 45 minutes via the Bay Bridge or the San Mateo Bridge, depending on traffic.

  • Berkeley to SFO: about 40 to 55 minutes via the Bay Bridge.

  • Pleasanton, Dublin and San Ramon to SFO: about 45 to 60 minutes via I-580 and the San Mateo Bridge.

When should I leave the East Bay for an SFO flight?

Most airlines suggest arriving about 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international flight. Work backward from that, then add a buffer for the bridge:

  • Weekday mornings (roughly 6 to 9 a.m.): westbound traffic on the San Mateo and Dumbarton Bridges is at its heaviest. Add at least 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Before 6 a.m.: the roads are usually clear, which is why early flights are one of the easiest trips we make.

  • Friday afternoons and holiday weekends: plan on the slow end of every estimate above.

When you book with us, tell us your flight time and we'll suggest a pickup time that leaves room for traffic.

What are the ways to get from the East Bay to SFO?

Driving and parking at SFO

Driving yourself is simple until you get to the airport. Parking for a week adds up quickly, long-term lots often mean another shuttle to the terminal, and you come home tired to a car you still have to find and drive.

BART

BART reaches SFO, and there are stations in Hayward, Fremont, Union City, Pleasanton, Dublin and Oakland. From most East Bay stations the trip takes about an hour or more and usually involves a transfer. BART also doesn't run overnight, so it won't work for very early flights or late arrivals, and it's a lot to manage with kids or big suitcases.

Rideshare apps

App rides are on demand, which is the catch for airport trips. Prices jump at busy times, a driver can cancel before pickup, and finding a car at 4 a.m. in the suburbs isn't guaranteed. You also get whatever car shows up, which may not fit a family's luggage.

A pre-booked car service

A licensed car service is scheduled ahead of time, so the car is waiting when you walk out the door. You know your quote before you book, the vehicle is sized for your group and bags, and a professional chauffeur handles the bridge traffic. It's the most reliable option for early flights, business travel and families.

Which vehicle should I book for an SFO trip?

  • 1 to 4 passengers: Cadillac XTS sedan.

  • Up to 7 passengers or lots of luggage: SUV (Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Chevrolet Suburban or Mercedes GL).

  • Up to 11 passengers: Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit van, ideal for family trips and teams flying together.

Should I fly out of OAK or SJC instead?

Sometimes. Oakland International (OAK) is only about 15 to 20 minutes from Hayward, and San Jose (SJC) is close to Fremont. But SFO has far more nonstop and international flights, so many East Bay travelers end up there anyway. We drive to all three, plus Hayward Executive Airport (HWD) for private flights, so pick the flight that works best and we'll handle the ride.

Getting home from SFO

The return trip is where a booked car helps most. Instead of waiting for an app or a shuttle after a long flight, you have a ride scheduled. Let us know your arrival time when you book and we'll plan your pickup around it.
