San Jose to SFO Car Service: SJC vs. SFO, Drive Times and When to Leave
The short answer
From San Jose, SFO is about 40 to 60 minutes away by car up US-101, and San Jose International (SJC) is usually 10 to 20 minutes away. For early flights, business travel and families with luggage, a pre-booked car service is the easiest way to get to either airport: door to door, no parking and available 24/7. American Limo & Sedans provides car service in San Jose and across Silicon Valley every day.
Should I fly out of SJC or SFO?
If your flight works from SJC, it's usually the easier choice. It's close to downtown San Jose, smaller and quicker to get through. SFO is worth the longer drive when you need a nonstop flight SJC doesn't offer, an international flight, or a better fare or schedule. A simple rule many South Bay travelers use: check SJC first, and book SFO when it saves you a connection.
Either way, we drive to both. See our SJC car service and SFO car service pages.
How long does it take to get from San Jose to SFO?
Typical drive times to SFO outside of rush hour. Weekday mornings on northbound US-101 can add 20 to 30 minutes or more.
Downtown San Jose and North San Jose: about 40 to 60 minutes
Santa Clara and Sunnyvale: about 35 to 50 minutes
Mountain View and Palo Alto: about 25 to 40 minutes
Cupertino, Campbell and Los Gatos: about 45 to 60 minutes
Milpitas: about 40 to 55 minutes
Evergreen, Almaden Valley and South San Jose: about 50 to 70 minutes
For comparison, most of San Jose is 10 to 20 minutes from SJC.
When should I leave San Jose for an SFO flight?
Most airlines suggest arriving about 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international flight. Work backward from that, then add a buffer for traffic:
Weekday mornings (roughly 6 to 9:30 a.m.): northbound US-101 is at its slowest. Add at least 20 to 30 minutes. I-280 is sometimes the better route, and our chauffeurs will pick the faster one on the day.
Before 6 a.m.: the roads are usually clear, so early flights are some of the easiest trips to plan.
Friday afternoons and holiday weekends: plan on the slow end of every estimate above.
Tell us your flight time when you book and we'll suggest a pickup time that leaves room for traffic. We operate 24/7, and a small early morning pickup fee applies, which is included in your quote.
What are the ways to get from San Jose to SFO?
Driving and parking at SFO
Driving yourself is simple until you get there. Airport parking for a week adds up, long-term lots often mean another shuttle to the terminal, and after a long flight you still have to drive home down 101.
Caltrain and BART
You can take Caltrain from San Jose Diridon or another South Bay station to Millbrae, then BART one stop to SFO. It works for light travelers, but with transfers it usually takes 90 minutes or more, trains run less often early and late, and it's a lot to manage with kids or big suitcases.
Rideshare apps
App rides are on demand, which is the catch for a 40-mile airport trip. Prices jump at busy times, a driver can cancel before pickup, and finding a car at 4 a.m. isn't guaranteed. You also get whatever car shows up, which may not fit a family's luggage.
A pre-booked car service
A licensed car service is scheduled ahead of time, so the car is waiting when you walk out the door. You know your quote before you book, the vehicle is sized for your group and bags, and a professional chauffeur handles the 101 traffic while you work or rest.
Which vehicle should I book?
1 to 4 passengers: Cadillac XTS sedan, the usual choice for business travelers.
Up to 7 passengers or lots of luggage: SUV (Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Chevrolet Suburban or Mercedes GL).
Up to 11 passengers: Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit van, ideal for teams and family trips.
Getting home: SFO to San Jose
The ride home is where a booked car helps most. Instead of waiting for an app or a train after a long flight, you have a ride scheduled. Let us know your arrival time when you book and we'll plan your pickup around it.
